Philip Hughes Obituary

Philip “Phil” Lee Hughes, 74, of Rock Hill passed away on Saturday, November 21, 2020 following a period of declining health.


Phil was born on August 25, 1946 in Montgomery County, Ohio to the late Robert Walter and Polly Gibbs Hughes. He was retired from the United States Air Force where he served our country for over thirty years. Phil also worked in food service serving as a manager for numerous franchises such as Olive Garden, Bob Evans and Applebee’s; following his retirement from food service he worked with Advance Auto Parts. He was also employed with the Palmetto Funeral Group working at Bass-Cauthen, Palmetto and Whitesell Funeral Home. Phil was a dedicated worker and provider for his family. He always found time to be give back to his community as he refereed high school sports, built Habitat for Humanity homes and went on mission trips with his church. His family will remember him for his love of 60’s music, Pepsi Cola, the Cleveland Browns, Cincinnati Reds, but most importantly that he was a die hard Ohio State Buckeye Fan. Phil was a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother; his kindness and gentle spirit impacted so many and his memory will be alive with all of us forever.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a grandson Justin Hughes, nephews Erik Kilbarger and Jacob Hughes, and brother-in-law and friend Kenny Kosch.


Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 23 years Cheryl Ann Hughes, children; Brian Hughes and wife Mary, Christopher Hughes and wife Stacy, Michael
Hughes and wife Kristin, Layne Lanpher and significant other Jesse Lovejoy; and Brandyn Lanpher, three brothers; David Hughes and wife Alicia, Donald “Don” Hughes
and wife Terry, Rick Hughes, four sisters; Pat Carpenter and husband Rich, Margie Kosch, Jan Greenlee, and Deb Hughes; grandchildren Ericka Niederhaus and husband
Danny, Joey Hughes, Jacob Hughes, Hailleigh Hughes, Kendal O'Neal, Madison Hughes, Reese Hughes, and Ryen Hughes. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews,
extended family and his K-9 companions Sophie, Allie and Tara.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date by his family in Lancaster, Ohio. 

The family would like to extend their sincerest appreciation to all of the family, friends and health care workers who have supported them during this time.
